Many modern phrases have their origins in the Bible. A couple that come to mind are, “She’s worth her salt,” or, “He is the salt of the earth.” They remind us of what Scripture says when using salt as an analogy.

Matthew 5:13 says, “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.”

Tasting our favorite salty foods is a great sensory experience. Think of French fries, pretzels, or popcorn. Foods that are plain jane without salt are out of this world with a dash of our favorite seasoning. Too much salt can be unhealthy, but even here the biblical analogy helps us.

We are to share Christ with the world in such a way that the story of His plan for us becomes something that people want to know more about. Likewise, we don’t have to lay it on so thick it is overwhelming. Over-using our messaging just turns people off, and can feel like manipulation instead of an open invitation.

We are to do as Christ Himself instructed us: take His story to the ends of the earth.

Let’s pray.

Lord, thank you for that salty story of Jesus! Help us to use it as spiritual food that builds your eternal Kingdom. Amen.
