Abby was in a funk. She was on the outs with her two best friends, her part-time job at a local restaurant needed her for way more hours than she wanted to give, and her beloved childhood dog was on his last summer, according to the vet.

When she headed back home after her freshman year of college, Abby was looking forward to reconnecting with friends from high school and taking it easy, but it turned out adulting was a little more complicated than she bargained for.

She had a list of complaints from miniscule to major, and it was turning out to be a frustrating season.

Abby sent a text to her youth pastor and planned a coffee date, ready for whatever wisdom her spiritual mentor had to dispense. She just wanted to fix this mess and keep moving forward.

Hannah listened to Abby’s troubles, then pulled up Psalm 62:5 on her phone — one of her favorite verses: “Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.”

She explained that God isn’t a life-repair-guy, but He does want peace for us. Prayer is a powerful resource, and asking God for peace and contentment in the midst of struggle is a good place to start.

Abby’s summer didn’t turn out the way she had hoped, but connecting with God, and seeking contentment in Jesus’ name, made all the difference in her attitude and her ability to be at peace before she headed back to school.

Let’s pray.

Father God, thank you for every circumstance that brings us closer to you. Our imperfect lives can be disappointing and frustrating, but we find rest and contentment in your presence. Thank you for that.  Amen.
