Modern society lives in a constant state of discontentment, and the messaging we hear on a daily basis constantly entices us to buy into that state of being.

Our home or mobile phone or television is too small, too basic, too old.

Our hair is the wrong color, cut, or texture, our faces are too plain, and the shape of our bodies...imperfect, obviously.

We don’t drive the right car, wear the right designer labels, or attend the right schools.

But what if the best way to be “right,” has nothing to do with these external aspects of our being?

1 Timothy 6:6–12 says, “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”

The only lasting source of contentment is Jesus Christ. We’ll never be satisfied with the people, things, or circumstances we surround ourselves with in this life, but the hope we find in the Lord will quench our thirsty souls for all eternity.

Let’s pray.

Lord, you are the only source for the peace our weary souls seek. Draw us nearer to you, and keep our gaze on higher things.  Amen.
