Since the beginning of time, millions of people have denied the existence of God. They are called different names: unbelievers, atheists, maybe agnostic. Many of them have quite a bit to say about it, and have even become famous doing so.

God also has something to say about it. A fascinating verse in the Bible speaks directly to this question of the existence of God, and it also speaks to our discussion this week.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 says, “He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”

Notice the second sentence. We are actually told that God has “set eternity” in each human heart. What does that mean?

Well, King Solomon was telling us that each of us has that ‘God-shaped hole’ in us that you’ve probably heard about it. That is a metaphor for that sometimes-odd, uncomfortable feeling we get, and it does seem to come from the heart. We’re sailing along and then all of a sudden we stop and feel odd. An empty feeling. Or maybe a longing.

That is eternity calling to us from somewhere up ahead. It is proof that God is real, and has caused each of us to want to know Him, if we’re honest.

Do you ever feel like that? Like, maybe today?

Let’s pray. Lord, we know you are there. It’s obvious. Help us share the Good News with others who have the same feelings. Amen.
